Gajendra's death during AAP rally may have been an accident: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police on Tuesday said Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh's death during an Aam Aadmi Party rally at Jantar Mantar last week may have been an accident and not a suicide. "Gajendra's death was an accident. Forensic experts opined that he died due to asphyxia. Investigations based on the circumstances and the analysis of the video grabs suggest he lost balance and tripped over. Since he was standing on the branch of a tree he could not react on time and the cloth that he had put around his neck became a noose and he died," a Delhi Police report said. The report says the police had asked for the assistance of trained staff along with a ladder from fire department to rescue Gajendra. "However, the members of the rally provoked and incited Gajendra. Despite not being trained, volunteers climbed the tree thereby leading to loss of balance and later Gajendra fell on the ground," the report said. Delhi Police also mentioned that SDM Chankyap

Gajendra Singh took his life due to stress over crop loss: Farmer's family

PTI, Jaipur: Family of a farmer from Rajasthan, who on Wednesday committed suicide at a public rally in the national capital, claimed that he took the extreme step due to "unexpected loss" of his crops. 41-year-old Gajendra Singh, a resident of Dausa district and father of three, took his life by hanging himself from  tree, while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was addressing a farmers rally on the issue of Land Acquisition Ordinance. Gopal Singh, the victim's uncle, said, "Gajendra was under stress and disturbed due to loss of crop." "He took the extreme step due to unexpected loss. He earned his livelihood through farming and after the loss,  he was disturbed," Gopal said. The Dausa district administration, however, countered the family's claim, saying, loss of crop "does not appear to be the reason" behind it. "Loss to crops does not appear to be a reason of suicide. His family's financial condition is fine and they h

Delhi will now vote and choose projects

NEW DELHI: Delhiites will have a say in the development of their neighbourhoods. To fulfil its manifesto promise of Swaraj (self-rule), the AAP government is making citizens participants in governance. They will meet and decide what civic projects should be taken up in their locality.  For now, it is an experiment limited to 11 of Delhi's 70 assembly constituencies, and only voters registered at the polling centres where meetings will be held can participate. This pilot project will formalize the place of 'participatory budgeting' in the new government's planning process.  On Sunday, the first round of meetings will be held in Patparganj, the constituency of deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia. The process will be followed in the other 10 constituencies over a month so that their development priorities are finalized by mid-May and placed before the state assembly in June when it meets to discuss the city's budget for 2015-16. To ensure participatio

AAP to bring Jan Lokpal Bill back on table

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): Started working on the Jan Lokpal Bill that had brought an end to the 49-day Arvind Kejriwal-led government in 2014. According to sources, a review of the draft prepared the last time is on and a decision to bring more departments under it will be taken soon. “The draft is already there and the administrative reforms department has been asked whether any changes are required. Once finalized, the bill will be cleared by the cabinet,” said a Delhi government official, requesting anonymity. Sources said the bill will be tabled in the budget session that will be held by the end of May or the first week of June.  The name of the Bill — either Janlokpal or Delhi Lokayukta — will be known only when the draft goes through the cabinet. The draft is largely based on the Uttarakhand Lokayukta Bill. “It differs in some regards. The inclusion of the chief minister office in the purview of the proposed law is one major difference,” the official add

CM Arvind Kejriwal writes to Bassi, demands a say in policing matters

Having to govern Delhi without control over its police force was always going to be a thorny issue with the AAP government and less than two months into his second stint, the chief minister has felt the need to raise the issue of policing with commissioner B S Bassi. CM Arvind Kejriwal has written to Bassi raising a score of issues. He has demanded that a copy of the transfer and posting policy of Delhi Police  be marked to his office. He also wants a list of officers serving in their present posts, despite having completed their tenures, and the names of all SHOs and traffic inspectors together with the dates they joined their current posts. Citing the President’s order of September 24,1998, Kejriwal said the information he wants has been sought in accordance with that notification. The order states that the Lt-Governor has to exercise his police powers in consultation with the chief minister. “Therefore, the CM is required to brief the L-G on such (policing) matters on a regular

An Open Letter to Yogendra Yadav From AAP's Ashutosh

(Ashutosh joined the Aam Aadmi Party in January 2014. The former journalist took on former Union minister Kapil Sibal and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in the national election from Chandni Chowk in Delhi.) Dear Yogendra Bhai On this historic day, I want to remember the time when I first met you. It was 1997 and the parliamentary elections results were pouring in. It was a different era - the election results used to take 72 hours to come in and Doordarshan would cover them in the minutest detail. It was in the DD studio in Khelgaon that I met you. I was a young reporter who had been given a chance for the first time to anchor live just for two hours and you were one of the panelists on my show. I was curious and restless. I was impressed with your psephological understanding and political analysis. We continued to remain in touch, though not very frequently. When I joined IBN7 as Managing Editor, thanks to Rajdeep, you became a permanent fixture in our election-related analysi
