AAP Move to buy power from cheaper sources

Written by Shalini Narayan | The AAP government is planning to seek de-allocation from high-cost power stations so that it can buy electricity from cheaper sources to help fulfil its poll promise of cutting electricity tariffs by nearly half. Reducing the average per unit cost of purchasing power would allow the government to stick to its declared goal of capping all subsidies at Rs 2,000 crore. The government will also aim to fulfil its promise of conducting a CAG audit into distribution companies or discoms, and creating open access for consumers by bringing in competition among discoms. Sources told Newsline that the government is working on a strategy to alter power purchase agreements (PPAs) that have been signed by between discoms and producers. “The current tariff for power per unit between 1 and 200 units is Rs 4 and between 201 and 400 units, Rs 5.95. We are bound by the PPAs based on which the ministry of power gives power to distributors,” a s

A Charge Against AAP of Foreign Funding That Doesn't Stick

NEW DELHI:  A donation made to the AAm Aadmi Party or aap xx years ago by a businessman in Canada was bonafide, his wife told NDTV today. On December 5, 2014, JK Mann donated a thousand dollars to the party led by Arvind Kejriwal. A group that split from the party last year, and calls itself AVAM, had alleged this morning that the money  was paid by cheque, and allowed money laundering for a dubious Canadian entity. The allegations of money laundering against the Aam Aadmi Party by its breakaway faction suffered a major dent today as one of the donors came forth to say she had indeed made a donation and there was nothing irregular about it. This morning, the AAP Volunteer Action March, or AVAM, claimed a donation of $1000 that AAP received from one J K Mann was actually hawala money from a certain Canadian entity, Julio Oulovski. "My husband or I have no idea who this Julio Oulovski is," Jaskirat Mann, wife of JK Mann, told NDTV. She said her husband

This one chart shows why the BJP cannot lecture AAP on political funding

More than 80% of the saffron party's contributions came from unknown sources. Two crore rupees of contributions received by the Aam Aadmi Party have disrupted its campaign just four days before Delhi elections. On Monday, a group of former party volunteers held a press conference, pointing to four donations of Rs 50 lakh each made by bogus companies to the party coffers in April 2014. Since the companies have no credible business activity, the opponents of AAP took the chance to accuse the party of accepting illicit funds. “Hawala at midnight,” said Shazia Ilmi, the former AAP leader who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party last month. On Tuesday, no less than the finance minister Arun Jaitley labelled the donations from dubious companies as “round tripping of black money into the political system”. In their defence, the leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party have said that the party accepted the donations by cheque and disclosed all the details on its website. The leaders ex
