Gajendra's death during AAP rally may have been an accident: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police on Tuesday said Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh's death during an Aam Aadmi Party rally at Jantar Mantar last week may have been an accident and not a suicide.

"Gajendra's death was an accident. Forensic experts opined that he died due to asphyxia. Investigations based on the circumstances and the analysis of the video grabs suggest he lost balance and tripped over. Since he was standing on the branch of a tree he could not react on time and the cloth that he had put around his neck became a noose and he died," a Delhi Police report said.

The report says the police had asked for the assistance of trained staff along with a ladder from fire department to rescue Gajendra. "However, the members of the rally provoked and incited Gajendra. Despite not being trained, volunteers climbed the tree thereby leading to loss of balance and later Gajendra fell on the ground," the report said.

Delhi Police also mentioned that SDM Chankyapuri also visited the hospital and the mortuary. He stated that he has been authorised by Delhi Government to conduct a magisterial inquiry and the post mortem be conducted immediately. Also that the dead body should be kept in mortuary.

"After being asked by the local police to produce some official order in this regard, he could produce none," the report said. The cops said they are hopeful of achieving a breakthrough in the case in the next two days.

Sources said that Gajendra had told his relatives that he will be going to New Delhi to attend the AAP rally and asked them to switch on their TV since "something big will happen". Gajendra's family members, however, have maintained that he could not have committed suicide.
